The Department of English and Languages at Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies was set up in July 2005 with a vision to achieve synchronization between the interests of students and the demands of the contemporary world. It aims to translate the hope of students into tangible achievement.

The MA English programme is a two-year postgraduate programme that provides an in-depth understanding of language and literature. Students are introduced to literary texts from around the globe. The MA English programme covers a vast and diverse range of topics from ancient literature to popular culture. The MA English syllabus includes Critical Approaches, British Literature, Modern Indian Literature in English, American Literature, Language and Linguistics, Literary Theory, Gender Studies, European Literature in English Translation, Research Methodology, Translational Theory, Post Colonial Studies, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, etc.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to promote critical and technological literacy through general and advanced study in literature, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, ESL, linguistics etc. It specifically intends to promote literacy in the global language- to be precise the ability to read, write and think critically and analytically.

Duration : 2 Years

Eligibility : Candidates with 40% in aggregate in all the optional subjects and 50% of marks in the cognate subject at the Bachelor’s Degree level. Candidates with B.A., B.Sc., or B.Com Degree are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the Language concerned in the degree course.

Career Scope : Students of English Literature can get jobs with the media as reporters. It is also possible for them to get jobs with newspaper firms. Besides, they have good chances in news broadcasting firms like NDTV, CNN – IBN, Zee News, Star News Communication etc. Companies that print out Magazines as well as journals too take in students of English literature frequently. Content development and ITES firms are another areas where English post graduates can build a strong career. Students of English literature can also find jobs as independent literary critics, writing for print or online publications. They also have the option to start their own tuition centres for the English language.

After completion of MA English, one can pursue a career in writing, publishing, editing, education, research etc. Individuals can also opt for careers in the non-profit sector, public relations, marketing, journalism, mass communication etc. Many students continue to carry out research studies and earn a PhD degree.
