Civil Engineering


    Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, plan, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering discipline and is made up of many different areas or disciplines. It is important for civil engineers to have an understanding of all these disciplines as projects often involve many of them at the same time. More than any profession, civil engineering can have a positive effect on the protection of our environment. Since its foundation in 2009 under Visveswaraya Technological University, the Department of Engineering has grown to become one of the largest departments.

    Since its beginning, the Department of Civil Engineering has attracted exceptional faculty to teach our students and advance the discipline. We now boast of an impressive academic faculty, all of them with doctorates in their chosen field. Add to this our research faculty who have specialized in some of the latest areas in Civil Engineering, which includes, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water resource Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, CAD-Structures, Geology, and so on actively involved in some of the joint research projects with industries and Government Agencies. The department has Memorandum of Understanding with Construction Industry Development Council (Established by the Planning Commission, Government of India and Construction Industry), New Delhi dated 26th May 2014.

     The department has had many funded projects from Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology. The students of Civil Engineering have performed excellently well in campus placements of reputed IT industries and construction industries which will help our students to address major challenges and develop complete solutions in their professional life.

Under Graduate

B.E. in Civil Engineering

Duration  : 4 Years
Eligibility : Pass in 10+2 / Higher Secondary (HS) / Pre University (PUC) / 'A' Level (with 12 years of schooling) or its equivalent with English as one of the languages. Shall have secured a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and any one of the following : Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Electronics, Information Science. AIT admits students as per prevailing rules and regulations of VTU.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

1. Must exhibit their continuing successful practice as Civil engineers and/or pursuit of higher education with the application of advanced Civil engineering concepts.

2. Must showcase an understanding of professionalism, ethics, quality performance, public policy, safety and environmental sustainability enabling them to be constructive contributors to society while solving engineering problems and producing responsible civil engineering solutions, with great accountability and leadership.

3. Must become leading researchers and academicians who create and disseminate new knowledge in civil engineering.

4. Must become proficient and apply their techno-managerial skills in the planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of the built environment and global infrastructure, and utilizing their skills to analyze and design systems, specify project methods and materials, perform cost estimates and analyses, and manage technical activities in support of civil engineering projects.

5. Must pursue professional licensure.

Program Outcomes (POs)

a. Integrate Mathematics science and civil engineering knowledge from all sub disciplines in practicing civil engineering.

b. Identify source information, formulate solutions, analyze options and solve varying complex civil engineering problems.

c. Integrate design solutions with client requirement to produce feasible and practical solution with appropriate considerations.

d. Investigate various complex civil engineering problems to obtain solutions by design of experiments, analyze of data and synthesis of information using research based knowledge and methods.

e. Apply suitable modern tools to solve varying complex civil engineering problems.

f. Practice Civil engineering with a global perspective, informed by consideration in societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues.

g. Understand the impact of civil engineering towards environment and sustainable development.

h. Demonstrate ethical practices in the context of societal and civil engineering responsibilities.

i. Communicate complex civil engineering activities effectively with plans reports, documentation and presentation to all stake holders.

j. Apply knowledge of civil engineering principles as a member and leader in a team.

k. Develop confidence for self education and ability for life long learning to update civil engineering skills.

l. Competency in establishing project management and finance in civil engineering.
